Even with i-pods, laptops, cd players, radio, sometimes you want to hear what's on TV but are doing something else so do not want the picture.

Be great if all TV manufacturers have a music mode. No picture made or shown - save power! I know 1 does, be good if its a standard feature like the mute button!

Thank you Wikipedia for all the free information and with the the history tab I can see when, by who an an article was edited and what it was like before --> easily make out fake information!

pretty sad how Karnataka is in the press for all the wrong reasons again. MLAs running amuck, no one seems to have the power to stop them. and the ones who do - we people - well most do not know their power or can't get up to work together on a common goal. I guess its easier just to get your own work done and carry on.

But i do hope there is some legislature to stop MLAs or MPs from jumping parties. If you must - resign and stand again with the new party's ticket. This horse trading and weeks of no real governance is just wrong.

saw Avatar, yep a little late. was expecting more. pretty much a mix of a dragons + man plunders natives + lord of the rings style earth strikes back theme with a little 3d. reminded me a little of a mandrake the magician's story where all of Earth's banks are being robbed, and no one knows how and who. till the end its these aliens. when mandrake asks them - how can they when we have worked so hard to get the gold. they say, humans are an inferior race and we look at it the same way as we do when we take honey from bees! back to avatar my takeaway was i hope governments do have a better policy if we ever to come across intelligent alien life forms. and i hope more intelligent life forms will afford us the same courtesy.

- used to be the best dosa and sambar but now the masala dosa is still awesome but the sambhar quality has gone down. maybe if you can smuggle in sambar from home or from Chandrika (junction of Cunninghamd and Millers Road). wont be an issue at all as you can park and eat here as do a lot of folks esp at weekend breakka. the place is smaller now after the hotel and restaurant owners have split and it looks like some of the cooks and old time waiters have retired too.

I do not know why restaurants that charge less cannot spend a few minutes training their staff. i have left this place once when the steward was unnecessarily abrupt about availability. hey you want to keep show your attitude - that is cool. just don't expect me to eat and pay then!

windsor manor junction sankey road, pedestrian crossing

after the traffic signals were removed a year back at Windsor manor junction sankey road,pedestrian nightmare

police man there should stop traffic coming from Guutahalli towards Windsor Manor every 4-5 minutes for 30 seconds so we can cross. even at 3pm etc its busy. after 5 pm very busy. else put lights back to stop traffic before they enter the circle area for 30 seconds every 4-5 minutes.

So we can cross even when police 'busy'. I asked a police man to help me cross he said he has to see other traffic - then he went back to taking to the garderner who was tending the plants in the middle traffic Island!

Or are we going to wait till some people get hit by speeding vehecles OR some big shot has to cross the road on the way to one of the 5 star hotels?

bad end - Silver Star hotel, Palolem, Goa

1 star rooms and good food on the beach. Went off season (22nd July 2009 to 23rd) staff was helpful. Plain room - tv, western style loo. No soap, toilet paper, or hot water (but you can get most essentials at the shops 400 meters away). Owned by two brothers one of who I spoke to and seemed quite friendly.

Enjoyed my stay except - I was moving in to the Lalit Intertcontinental with my wife but wanted some clothes laundered. They agreed to clean them. When I checked out I did not ask for help and no one came forward to help with my 3 bags.

Realized the next day that I had the room key so I went immediately and dropped it off. All the staff was around the TV - slow days.

When I came back for my clothes on the 25th the other brother was there was he was not very nice. Said I owe him a days rent cause I had the room keys! I told him walking away with room keys is a common problem - that is why some star hotels have the paper or electronic keys now that can be easily replaced in house at a low cost.

He said how are they to know if I checked out or took the key along cause I meant to come back!

I reminded him : when I checked out I informed the staff that I was checking out, settled my bill and then left.

Then he started calling me a beggar and other obscenities, when I told him to shut up and cussed him one of his staff flew at me and had to be stopped by another.

Sad experience - will make me more wary of these low budget places in the future.

I can afford a car but don't. rather use public transport, borrow my dads, hitch a ride or higher a taxi if there is a dire need ... still have a big pollution footprint ... but minimise is the aim.

I think we owe it to nature for being the most powerful and smart to do more to stop its destruction. and the best part is that it pays back. in the long run more sanctuaries means more plants and trees ... a better world.

i love Java. Solve near every problem. Even UI with applets, J2ME and swing.

Java , J2ME mysql, apache web server - with them can solve most business problemns.

VBA - great tool - have delivered more than 10 projects using this language and it has helped with data and analysis with nearly all my other projects (in conjunction with Excel and Word).

VB6 - the full programming part of VBA

Windows 2000 was when windows OS got on par with unix and beat it in usability.

Oracle for showing all that a database can be.

MySql for being free and now powerful too.

J2ME for being easy to put apps on mobile devices

Linux for great performance ++ and all free

That's apt, considering that the TATA corporation could soon be making us say goodbye to of one of India's largest marine reserves - Gahirmatha, and with it one of the world's few remaining Olive Ridley turtle nesting grounds.

Every year, between 200,000 to 500,000 turtles make their way to the mass nesting beaches of Gahirmatha on India's east coast. This is just about 12 kilometres away from a giant port being constructed by TATA at Dhamra.

TATA is India's largest corporation and has a growing international empire, with its recent acquisitions of Anglo-Dutch steel maker Corus and the Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

In India, the company's reputation for social responsibility has been considerably tarnished over the last decade, and its performance on the Dhamra project is one of the reasons.

When the original environmental impact study turned out to have holes big enough to drive a fleet of Nanos through, we asked for a fresh, independent environmental impact study to be made, and for construction to stop until that is done. Seems like a simple demand, right?

But so far, we've hit a brick wall.

People are emailing, faxing and calling the Tatas on an hourly basis. But the port hasn't stopped.
200 scientists (many with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature) have speakon up. But the port hasn't stopped.

long back there was this 9 year old kid who had a neighbor over. he wanted
to impress her so he told her lets do a science experiment. see this lamp
without a shade? the bulbs hot. so hot that if we drop some water on it it
will instantly vapourize. she went "yeah?! but..." too late the lad had

a lot of times i have not so good things to say about cops and the government but sometimes they do nice things too. Friday saw a cop near the windsor manor signal pick up sand with his bare hands and put it on some oil that had spilt on the road. nice gesture to save a 2 wheeler or other from skidding. did not have phone so no snap. also good job the next day when they handled traffic well during the Advani rally

isn't the judiciary supposed to be separate from the govt? so "Death to Afzal within 100 days if NDA voted 2 pwr" means they will put pressure on the judges and get it into fast track? why not fast track now? cant we ask the current court to do that? there is enough proof - on film + his own statements to convict. police have had enough time to ask him questions, could have recounted every incident in his life by now.

if the system mandates that she should not vote in some precinct then the system should not allow the vote to take place - change the system

am not sure how its done in the US but atleaset here in India, besides soldiers, you need to turn up only at the voting booth closest to your home where u can vote - first you show ID (spl voter card or passport or DL or any govt id) if u rname is matched then u vote

if u change homes u need to register 2 months before or go to the old booth

of course in practice a lot of s**t happens. but only hear of charges against people who got violent or were impersonating someone. happens less now with the electronic machines. less counting violence and rigging too. one place where technology has had a +ve effect

UK Police spend £20,000 on cardboard officers

Police forces have spent more than £20,000 on cardboard cut-outs of uniformed officers designed to confuse criminals.

It was billed as the latest police tactic to combat crime and now the idea has taken off nationwide.

Police figures show that forces across the country have spent more than £20,000 on the flat-pack PCs.

West Midlands police said it had ordered 80 cardboard constables at a cost of just over £10,000. In Derbyshire, £6,650 was spent over the past two years on a "substantial number" of cut-outs.

"The theory is that it creates the impression at first glance of a capable guardian being on site, which hopefully also reduces the perception of fear of crime," said a Derbyshire police spokesman.

A survey using the Freedom of Information Act revealed that 13 forces in England and Wales have used cardboard officers.

Essex police said it spent £760 on eight cut-outs. They have been deployed in petrol stations, to deter drivers from speeding away without paying for their fuel, and also in shops to discourage shoplifting.

The force would not reveal precisely where the cut-outs have been placed because "to release locations is likely to jeopardise the success of the trials".

Cleveland police spent £1,760 on cardboard officers for use in shops, petrol stations and retail parks in Hartlepool, Redcar and Stockton-on-Tees.

The other forces which have used cut-outs are North Wales, South Wales, Greater Manchester, Durham, Humberside, Lancashire, Avon and Somerset, Norfolk and Surrey.

Rank-and-file officers, however, questioned the wisdom of spending police funds on fake officers.

Simon Reed, vice-chairman of the Police Federation, said: "While I appreciate that money may be tight for policing, this does seems a drastic solution to avoid paying any salary and pension costs.

"Ultimately it will be for local residents to decide if cardboard police officers work for their community and are good use of their taxes."

Several forces admitted to having suffered the theft of cut-outs. Three went missing from filling stations in Derbyshire in the past two years, while two were stolen in Cleveland.

Humberside reported the theft of one cardboard officer, which disappeared from a Tesco supermarket in Grimsby last November.

A spokesman for West Midlands police, which had the highest spending on cut-outs, said that some of the money would be reclaimed from shops which benefited from the scheme, but could not say how much had been recouped so far.

South Wales police created life-size replicas of two of its serving officers, community support officer Helen Ely and neighbourhood constable Dale Weaver.

Surrey produced cardboard replicas of an entire neighbourhood policing team to reassure residents and increase awareness of crime-prevention measures.

Commercially-produced promotional cut-outs can cost from £12 and £30 each.

No coat, no shoes, the boy walked out of the apartment after he was scared because his father left him home alone. This happened right on a main thoroughfare in Westchester - I drove right by the site about 20 minutes ago. This road is like a highway - 6 lanes wide!

I think its tuff to bring up a kid without support. i think its an African saying "It takes a village to being up a child". I'm not saying that its OK what the dad did - like on the site's comments he could have kept him warm, etc and should have taken him along or gotten someone to watch him.

I belive in God - and I agree with this message to a large extent. right now it is blind belief in religion that's making a few bait others, and fewer go crazy and bomb others. its something that we all need to fix. make religion more private, not about public and more subtle spreading.

In India we have crazy rights & terrorists fighting with religion as the cause , missionaries steering up Hindus to become violent, government appeasing the minorities for votes, it sickens me to the core.

and its true - science has made things a lot better, but religion has just made things more segmented etc

spirituality is required but the present day religious set up is counter productive.

its true that science causes a lot of crap to - ask the people over at Hiroshima ... or anyone who's been the victim of a chemical leak ... but those are mistakes where as most modern religions at their core tell u - we are the best, spread this word ... science does not do that.

Bought a vodahphone SIM Card / mobile phone connection 25 days back ready to return it !

First there is no service in my house. So I complain. They say they will fix it in 10 days. it works just outside so I think yes they might - had issues with airtel before - and they boosted the signal in 5 days. also was ill so could not go out anywhere.

after 12 days no action. I took this connection as it was meant to be less money and wanted to try something new.

today decided to go cancel it - office closed at 8pm - but there was someone inside. so I wrote a short letter saying I want to cancel my account, no discussion just stop charging me (I was in a hurry as it was end of billing cycle in 5 days) tried to give the letter to the guard he would not take it - no letter box then signaled to the guy who was still inside - it was 820pm he came and heard me but would not take it gave message:
I'm Pavan a cashier but this is not my work time and I wont take anything to give to anyone nor put it on their table so they see it tomorrow.

well, now wait till tomorrow and cancel. don't believe this bad service especially after those ads!

i got to know of plime today quite a nice concept http://www.plime.com/f/312/37/#q3 has an inbuilt rating system for articles, views , people ... quite powerful. not 100% accurate - i know cause a link a someone who works for me was down flagged when the site is legit - but then the nets a lot about people acting quick with pre convieved notions without digging for the truth. that said i found the rest of the site quite fresh and easy to use i found it relevant to India cause its another great web site where Indians can communicate, find new information etc like about the nurse that removed an IUD without permission http://www.plime.com/l/90249/2/#q4

My response:
the big thing that I see as the diff is that humans are sentient - most high animals feel pain show love for off spring - but only we are sentient.

FYI - I'm a happy non veg - just that I did not see the simile with micros. killing baby seals is more unbearable as its not for food and the manner of killing is really barbaric.

But in the end its the livelihood of many that's why a "first world" government like Canada allows it. I'm against it - but then have we all stopped using TVs, petrol, chemicals, cigarettes, Computers and mobiles even though they are all harmful to us? they harm the atmosphere and kill other life too - direct and in direct . Examples are too many but a few are: oil spills - birds, chemicals in rivers - fish, over population, farming - all forests and animals in them.

When you stop using a car / bus / train / chemicals/ plastic ... then you can sit on a high moral horse and preach about double stds. Until then we all have double standards. Just few are so old and well ingrained that the double is forgotten.

yesterday had a bad experience was dozing off in auto and suddenly auto guy starting grumbling. apparently he had jumped red signal and now was scared he was caught on 'flash camera' - i told him but i never told u to go fast .... he said yeah but a bus first crossed the red, he followed close behind, then the bus guy slowed down .... so he had to brake and then by the time he caught up he was very late and feared he was caught on camera .... he kept grumbling till i got off 1 km away - i gave him rs 40 and distracted left my mobile in the auto :(

A wizard starts and you need to prss Next to get thru the welcome screen. The next image shows the opened image in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Now press Ctrl-P or choose the Print icon (its between the Red X: Delete and Disk like: Save icons)

At this point you see an image like below: showing the images in that folder, just skip this with Next if you want to print only the current picture (this screen does not appear if there is only one image in that folder):-

Press Next choose the printer then press Printing Preferences (image s4.jpg ):

Image s5.jpg shows my printers preferences - its a HP and gives me the option to choose Best and the paper size.

Press Ok to exit the printers preferences and get back to the orignal wizard (Picture & Fax Viewers print wizard s4.jpg), here press next . Then you will see the image below which is the Picture & Fax Viewers print wizards screen to select the print type, here the default should be ok - Full Page Print centered and rotated to fit. See s6.jpg:

Press Next to send the job to the printer. You can monitor the jobs in the printer window (Printer Monitor icon usually appears in the system tray and clicking that opens the window).
The wizard will should show you a completed screen like s7.jpg s7

I hope you found this post useful, your welcome to comment. You could print with Internet explorer (IE) or any other browser or even Paint. In IE I found you need to remove the header and footer page number etc from the Print preferences window.

Heart By Pass - alternative - Useful Information

This is a new technique which has come to my knowledge very recently and I thought that I should also share with you all.

A few days back my Friends Father- in- law was admitted in a nursing home due to severe chest pain.

He had an attack in 1997 and was undergoing normal treatment.

Due to the sudden pain just 15 days back we once again got him admitted in a private nursing home at Kandiwali, Mumbai.

The doctors later suggested for Angiography.

We conducted the Angiography at Hinduja Hospital and knew from the reports that he has multiple blockages.

The doctor told that he cannot undergo Angioplasty due to several blockages but suggested "By Pass Surgery".

The same day evening we bought him home since the doctor suggested that his heart is very weak and we can perform the by-pass only after 15 - 20 days.

In the mean time we were discussing this issue with our relatives and friends, we got this new information from one of our family friends.

There is a new therapy in the market which is known as - Chelation Therapy. Or Calation Therapy.

According to this therapy any patient who has to undergo by-pass need not undergo the same.

The patient is given appx. 18 bottles of blood where in some medicines are injected along with it.

The blood cleans the system and removes all the blockages from the heart.

The no. of bottles may increase depending upon the age factor and health of the patient.

The cost of the blood per bottle would be appx. Rs.2,500/- The treatment takes of appx. 1 month.

I hate that the government/ cops have removed the signal near my house so cant cross easily. they removed the traffic signal near Windsor manor hotel cause they wanted to make a quick corridor to the new air port and promised a pedestrian underpass - but no sign of even starting on construction of that yet. as*$#!les should have left the signals for at least crossing road every 3 minutes till underpass ready. local governments suck.

Only reprieve is 530-8:30pm when there is a cop there who manually stops the traffic from one side when there is too much traffic on the 'signal less ' corridor - meaning its a failure and another example that they don't know what they are doing and cant plan - the new road system is ok when there is less traffic but they should have left the traffic signals for when there is heavy load and the pedestrian crossing all the time

seventy mm - how to sue background : I had a bad experience with seventy MM now i have 2 of their discs and they have my deposit money Rs550. they did not react to my asking for my money back (they sent sms to get movies back when i called to ask for my money back they would say ok the concerned department will get back in 2 days ... this haappened 6-7 times since 2008 july. finally i called the manager and told him am recording the convo and will send a court notice. he said he will send cheque in 2 day. i said no either give me a DD or cash ( i reminded him i paid by cash) else give me the check and iwill give the discs when the check is clearer as i dont trust them. they never got back. i have the receipt of deposit.

now my question is what can i do next? which consumer forum in bangalore? need to go via a laweyer or can i fill a form and initiate? i want my money and damages (time and bearing the bad service) . anyone successfully gone thru something similar? i now use big flix - marginally better

CASH back cards - I don't know of all the offers but I know the standard chartered one is a scam. they charged me 3000 for it, I took it as I knew I had some high value transactions coming up. but then I came to know - after using it for 2 months that the max cash back is 500 at 1% for regular transactions 2.5% for petrol and 5% for telecom but BSNL charges 2% for credit card payments and the standard chartered site does not have anything like Citibank for free bill pay.

The total cash back is Rs 500/- per month - that means in a year max 3,000 , you charged 3,000 and its hard to spend enough to get the cash back every month; this is a standard chartered scam.

I'm going to cancel my card in a few days and stick to my citi bank at least they tell you all the charges upfront and there is no charge if u pay within the bill period - nothing yearly or recurring.

On flying ... its not eco friendly but god is it faster! I was very impressed with the red ac super comfort Volvo bus service to the new Bangalore airport . got there in 35 minutes from my house (near Windsor manor hotel) - that was early Sunday but on return - rush hour Wednesday 6 50pm to 7 50pm!

unfortunately not many people are using this service ... they do not know u can go for Rs125-250 in an AC bus that has only 2/3 seats - rest is racks for luggage - so its great and quick to get on and off - luggage is in the same area as the passengers.

of course no one to help u ... but for most beats a taxi/ self drive. even if u r going to see someone off u can go with them in the bus and return in comfort ... save money and nearly same time as car ...

Meditation Technique with Breathing

Meditation

Hi please try it for 2- 3 weeks at least !

Remember there are a lot of methods to meditate . This is an old yoga method that is simple and very effective but only if practised regularly so give it 3 weeks - best 40 days and do it daily - best is in the morning - freshens you up and gets you ready for the day . If not can do it anytime except keep a gap of 25-30 mins.. after a meal .

Loosen any tight clothing - and remove shoes/socks/belts if possible.

Enjoy life ponder on the little pleasures like on eating a grape savour the taste.

The technique itself is {takes about 10 mins.}:

Sit down cross legged on a mattress or carpet OR on a comfortable chair if you can't sit down .

Close your eyes ;

Say a 10 second prayer of thank-u

Keep your arms on your side , with your palms made in a fist and kept near your shoulders - your elbows bent and near your body ,
Now in quick movements straighten and raise your arms right up and then back to ur sides - let them slap your ribs lightly as they come down - so breathe in when u raise and breathe out when u come down .
Do this 10 - 12 times then rest for half a minute then again and rest and once again .

If you didn't get that part its OK - do the next part well - its the main thing .

Now concentrate on ur breathing count slowly to 20 breathing slow - one count for every i n and o u t s l o w ....

Healthy and yummy - hardly any oil and full of whole wheat , greens and other goodies . Use a non stick pan . English names of ingredients in the bottom.

Recipe for Methi Roti

Glossary:

Methi - fenugreek dhania - coriander podina - mint kotimir - fresh green coriander leaves jeera - cumin besan - chickpea flour atta - whole wheat flour ( you got to learn how to cook rotis first - see here - geberic roti )

Ingredients Required :

1. 2 onions 2. 2 Bunches of Methi 3. 2 Inch Ginger 4. 1/4 tsp. Ajwaan 5. 1/4 tsp. white jeera 6. 2-4 Big green chilies 7. 1.5 tsp. dhaniya powder 8. Salt as much required 9. Red chili powder 10. 1/2 cup of milk 11. 2 cups of atta (flour) 12. 2 tsp. oil 13. 1 bunch of pudina leaves 14. Kotamari leaves

Method :

Cut onions, methi, pudina leaves into fine pieces, Mix atta with oil,milk and add water as needed Add all the cut pieces and all the above ingredients into the atta and leave it for 10 minutes.

Different Taste :

Add 1/2 cup basin atta.

Thanks Kunad for , I was just to lazy to find out all the English names :- Just read your mom's recipe and thought I would send the English names of the ingredients to the Methi Roti.

Methi = Fenugreek

Jeera = Cumin

Dhaniya = Corriander

Atta = wholewheat flour

Pudina = Mint

Kotamari = Corriander leaves

Besan = Gram flour

There are no equavalents to ajwaan the closest in taste to it is probably caraway seeds although not quite. Keep sending your mom's recipes to the likes of us out here.

hi anyone had or know anyone who has recently - last 1-2 years had a lower back ortho operation for decompressing discs that were pressing on nerves?

my mom just had one and after that I have heard from someone that its not really effective pain comes back after a few months. doc says got to do the exercise self physiotherapy that they will teach. right now she is in pain due to op - they say it will get better in a month or so

any more experiences to share?

hello I wanted to share that my taya (dads eldest bro) has diabetes and he learnt of having 2 drops of pure sandalwood oil with 2 drops of honey with 20ml warm water first thing in the morning. after this nothing to eat for an hour. so he does this first then brushes etc ...

Do for 15 days then stop for 45 days then again do for 15 days ... cycle ...

says it has really helped him control. he still has medicines and takes injection but less dozes and best part - feels better

How to add to your start up?

I assume you have a windows xp or 2000 or vista?

With windows 7 need to make the short cut in some other folder say 'My documents' and then copy paste it to start up. Or have a program make it for you. In both cases need to be a administrator. Done this so that no malicious website/ app adds it self to your start up

Assuming you do , one way would be to right click on your computers windows START button.

click explore

2nd one from top Explore not "Explore ALl Users"

Now you should see a folder similar to:

"D:\Documents and Settings\tushar\Start Menu"
replace tushar with your user name (Sruthi, Joe or user1 ...)
now look for an open a folder called

Programs , then another folder called Start up

This folder has things that are done everytime you start up

Now you should be at a folder like

"D:\Documents and Settings\tushar\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

Here right click
in the context menu that appears choose (click)New and then choose Shortcut

Enter the web site address/ command :

Another way is to add the browser to the start up folder (by copying a short cut to the start up folder) and then adding the pages you want opened as the home page, but then this will happen everytime you open the browser not only when you restart your browser. So the first method is better.

I hope this helps some of you put programs on your start up, especially the cancer cure one. also you can find programs you do not want and move them from your start up folder.

* 2002 Mphasis- BFL - the software part: typical service - give u 2 projects at a time if ur good and scream about bugs. little extra curricular. keep telling u to wait for pay hikes. though i hear itsw become better since

* GE - GTS (IMI), Blr great culture but some positions have less software and more project mgt. also if u can do a project in time then its great but if u have difficultues then there are 5 managers trying to 'manage' it - cross matrix .... and in the end whatever reason u lose u r rating

* CTS Blr prety nice except too much amphasis on process even if the process is dumb.

Hindi Movie - pretty nice.

THINGS I HATED IN THE MOVIE
=============================

1) There is absolutely no food in the 2nd son's house - where the dad lives. No biscuits, no bread - empty fridge - crap. They could have just shown that there was no cooked food - insensitive and plausible.
2) The folks meet after 6 months, decide to spend some time together - but do not call up their kids - OK so the kids were asses but why become insensitive and ogres like them ? Strange message there.

Well it was a OK movie over all - though as usual had to forward a lot of songs. The end was pretty well done. And the comedy was well done and a welcome - cause of the rest tear-jerk movie.

ABOUT
======
The movie is about a coupled and their family - four sons and a adopted son. The father gives his kids all his savings and expects them to look after him and his wife. But the kids are a bunch off asses and decide to tell the folks that they have to live separately with them - one folk I one sons house and the other in another's. Rest of the story is about the pain that the couple of 40 years undergo at being separated and the bad attitude of their kids. Their saving grace are the grand kids and the friends they make.

This is not a complaint. I see policemen working ... on the roads at all times and hear that they have low salaries ... I wanted to do something without expecting anything in return. I propose a small scholarship to a randomly picked constables child of R1,000/-

I can leave it up to the chief of police to choose a deserving child (preferably girl child) who is in high school or college to benefit from this.

If its accepted than hopefully others will come forward and do the same.

I do not expect anything for this - its just a good gesture for a better society.

About Janmashtami

King Kansa was the most absolute and tyrannical monarch of the period; the bare mention of whose name was sufficient to send fear through the hearts of all good and peace-loving people. His sister's name was Devaki upon whom his brother Kansa showered brotherly love. And that is the reason why, on the day of Devaki's marriage to Vasudev, when the time came for Devaki to travel to her husband's house, that king Kansa wanted to drive the carriage himself as a token of his brotherly love.

The newly married couple were simple and beautiful, yet noble and majestic to look at. They were really very happy. The royal carriage richly decorated with precious gems and ornaments, was being followed by a large retinue of people wearing colourful gala dresses. Everything was pleasant all round.

Suddenly the face of nature changed. The birds stopped singing; the sun was obscured by a cloud; the soft breeze became a howling wind creating dust storms. Ill omens were pointing to imminent danger. An unaccountable fear suddenly gripped the minds of all in the procession. At such a time, an unseen voice, an oracle, was heard from above which said:

"Oh you foolish one, whom are you driving so merrily? Would you not know that the eighth issue of her womb shall be the cause of your death?"

On hearing this, the terrible Kansa sprang up from his seat, drew his sword, and was about to kill his sister on the spot, had not Vasudev intervened. Falling upon his feet, on behalf of his newly married wife, reminding Kansa that not Devaki but her eighth child would be the cause of his death. So he requested Kansa most humbly, to spare her life, she being fully innocent, and promised, since he had fear from her children, that each and everyone of them would be given over to him. Kansa felt the force of the reason and agreed to the proposal of Vasudev.

Besides his newly married bride Devaki, Vasudev had another good wife, named Rohini and with these two loving and dutiful wives he managed to live in peace and comfort.

In the course of time, the first male child was born to Devaki. Vasudev, true to his word, sent the news to King Kansa, who sent his servants to fetch the child whom he instantly killed with his own hands. Six children were thus killed by the cruel king, who foolishly wanted to avert the course of fate.

In the case of the seventh child, somehow or other the womb appeared to be fruitless, although it was really transferred, through divine agency, from Devaki to Rohini, who in due course of time, brought forth a child that, on account of its transference from one womb to another came to be known by the name of Sankarshana.

Now when the time for the birth of her eighth child was approaching, Kansa ordered Vasudeva and Devaki to be cast into his prison, bound with the same chain.

Both the wife and husband did not know what to do. Every minute of their lives they called upon their only hope, their only deliverance, God. The solace of the unhappy, ardent prayers proceeding from the very bottom of their souls, incessantly flowed out of their hearts; and the almighty Lord of the universe, in His own mysterious ways, was infilling their souls with infinite power of endurance which kept the fragile vessels of their delicate frames steady and safe in that gloomy and stormy sea of life.

For us, there is a lesson to be derived from this. We can draw great comfort from the Gita where the Lord tells us: Ch.8,verse 58-"Fixing your mind on Me, you shall by my grace, overcome all obstacles..."

Devaki was about to usher into the world its saviour, and she along with her husband, bewailed her lot and beating her forehead said: "O darling, be not born of me to be smashed to death by the cruel king Kansa". And with this, both Devaki and Vasudeva fell into a swoon. In the gloom of that unconsciousness, suddenly a light flashed, and a beautiful youth of sixteen, holding mace and discus, conch shell and lotus in his four hands, rose above the horizon of their mental firmament, healing all their mental wounds, cheering and exhilarating them with his sweet smile."Father and mother, weep no more. I have come at last to your rescue and to the rescue of all the good people. Open your eyes and see me as your child. Carry me father to the house of your friend Nanda in Gokula. His wife Yashoda has given birth to a daughter just now. Exchange me for that daughter. Bring her back to this prison leaving me on the lap of Yashoda who will be sleeping at the time. Nothing shall bar your path".

With these words, the soul-solacing charming youth vanished.

When Devaki and Vasudeva opened their eyes, they saw the most charming and beautiful baby ever a parent was blessed with. That was at midnight of Ashtami-Rohini day, the divine baby was born in Prison. The earth and the heavens were filled with joy. Flowers blossomed, rains fell from the sky, peacocks danced, the gods rained flowers, and divine music was heard. Devaki and Vasudeva forgot their miserable condition for a while, looking at the smiling baby playing with its tiny limbs. The mother kissed the sweet face and forgot her danger. Then after a while, they realised the real state of affairs and both the husband and wife shuddered. Then the sweet instructions of the fascinating youth in the vision flashed into their minds. Vasudeva clasped the child at once in his bosom to start for Gokula, but found that his legs were in chains. He did not know what to do. In his haste he gave a jerk, and his legs were released! He sprang upon his feet and ran towards the door of his dungeon. The massive iron-barred doors were locked with three fold locks; but the guards were all asleep, and therefore fearlessly he gave a push forward and the gates were unlocked and flew open of their own accord. The crossing over the river Yamuna was just as miraculous. Vasudeva reached Gokula and to his astonishment found the door of Nanda's house open. He exchanged the babies and hurried back to the prison of Kansa. Early in the morning, all the people at Gokula came to know that a beautiful male child, a prince had been born the previous night at midnight to Nanda's wife, and their simple hearts were filled with unbound joy.

We celebrated Krishna Janmashtami at home today, ie Lord Krishna's birthday.

Mom is not to well but luckily didi(sis) is visiting and made the arrangements.

Krishna_Cradle.jpg is a small cradle that we rock to denote the new born lord and happiness that he has come.
