Poems by Chris Sjögren

By Chris Sjögren Copyright 2005-2009

Longing for the love
You could still have
Continuing to long
Your door is closed
And you have lost your key

Only
There is no lock on the door
-Chris Sjögren

I saw them today
The middle-aged man
And the old man
The middle-aged man is really the young man
Here
And now
The old man is not so old
Only sick
The young man with the whole world
In his eyes
And the old man
With his eyes dimmed
Like an old man's eyes
High on painkillers

He sits there
Tries to move
In his ugly worn shirt
White
Borrowed from the hospital
He, too, is
Borrowed from the hospital
And just as white

The wind in his hair
The little he had left
The sun on his face
The lilacs flowering
Beautiful
As if they were created only for this very moment
The sun hurts his sensitive eyes
His medicine has taken away
His ability to feel the sweet perfume from the flowers

The young man
Drove the wheelchair
So very, very carefully

That, too
Is love

I could have
I would have
I should have
Oh, that damn ocean
That damn emotion

And the old man in the moon
Smiles
As if he knew
What this is all about
